Department Profile: Break Time’s Marketing and Merchandising Team

Competition among convenience store chains has heated up as retailers battle to win over consumers by redefining and expanding the concept of convenience. As customers’ expectations of a convenience store have evolved, Break Time has adjusted to meet their needs.

Break Time’s Marketing and Merchandising department is the team tasked with coordinating all the moving pieces associated with the Break Time brand such as managing promotions, developing advertising campaigns, maintaining the cost and retail of all SKUs and negotiating with vendors.

The department’s six members work together to distinguish Break Time from its competitors and support store operations.

MyTime Rewards, Break Time’s loyalty program, is an example of how the chain is incorporating new ideas to improve brand allegiance amongst its customer base. MyTime Rewards, which is administered by Break Time marketing manager Anita Bichsel, provides customers with opportunities to earn fuel discounts, free drinks, Break Time Bucks and more for repeat visits. Bichsel also oversees the production of all Break Time marketing materials, manages the brand’s social media accounts and ensures logos are used appropriately.

Food service is another area where convenience stores have ramped up their efforts to compete with rival chains and fast-food eateries. Stephanie Mahoney is Break Time’s food service development manager and she supervises the chain’s food offerings like Dashboard Diner’s grab-and-go sandwiches and the recently introduced Smokestack Bar.B.Q.

The department is also responsible for behind the scenes work such as inventory stocking and product pricing reviews to ensure Break Time stores operate successfully.

“Our programs and promotions are driving increased traffic to our stores, which in turn, helps our department contribute to the company’s profitability,” says Jennifer Bach, Break Time marketing and merchandising director.

As Break Time continues to look for new ways to attract new customers and retain its loyal patrons, the Marketing and Merchandising team keeps developing new offerings, promotions and deals to stay competitive.
