Benny Farrell, a farmer from Maryville, Mo. and fixture on the MFA Oil Board of Directors for decades, died Saturday June 4.
Farrell served on the MFA Oil board for 27 years, including 21 as its chairman. He played a fundamental role in guiding the cooperative to a number of important accomplishments, such as the expansion of its propane operations and the strategic diversification of its non-member business units.
The longtime chairman of the cooperative’s board was inducted into the Missouri Institute of Cooperatives’ Hall of Fame in 2019. The following is an excerpt from Farrell’s induction ceremony:
Whether serving as a delegate, director or the chairman of the board, Benny Farrell has proven to be a remarkable farmer-leader for MFA Oil and a strong advocate for its member-owners. His involvement started when he became a delegate for MFA Incorporated in 1962 and for MFA Oil in 1968. Throughout nearly six decades, Benny relished the opportunity to work on behalf of fellow farmers. Benny holds the distinction of being one of only two people to serve on the MFA Oil Company and the MFA Incorporated boards at the same time, giving him an integral part in the transition process as the two organizations separated into independent companies.
The fifth-generation farmer was known for being at the top of his game during board meetings. He played an essential role in shaping the direction of the company and overseeing the board during a time of impressive business growth.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 8 and funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, June 9. Details can be found in Farrell’s obituary.
