When MFA Oil acquired Basin Propane in Vernal, Utah, it stretched the company’s western presence far beyond the cooperative’s traditional operating territory. Since that acquisition in 2015, the propane plant in Vernal has served as MFA Oil’s only outpost west of the Rocky Mountains until now. This spring, a new propane plant was opened in Craig, Colorado, which is about 120 miles east of Vernal on U.S. Highway 40.
“We saw an opportunity to expand into Colorado and build upon our western territory,” says Kenny Steeves, vice president of bulk fuel and propane operations. “This will help to support our existing operations in Utah, which was already working with customers in Colorado, while broadening our service area.”
Steeves has high hopes for the plant in Craig and further growth in Colorado. He envisions eventually establishing a plant near Steamboat Springs and continuing the company’s western expansion.
The new plant in Craig is being managed by Garrett Antoine, who also oversees the operations at the Vernal facility.
“Growing our customer base in the area has been fairly easy due to our team providing quality customer service, which seemed to be lacking by the other companies in the area,” Antoine says. “Combined with our plant in Utah, we should be well positioned for any future plans in the West.”
