“It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do.” – Unknown
A few weeks ago, Steve Lasater stepped into harm’s way to protect two members of his community that fell victim to a gunman’s rampage. Lasater, an MFA Oil plant manager, heard gunfire ring out the morning of August 1 as a man opened fire on employees of a t-shirt printing business in Lockwood, Mo.
The attacker was a disgruntled former employee who came to the business to confront another employee against which he held a grudge. The gunman fired on his target from the road and then followed him into Prairie Mountain Screening, where the intended victim sought cover.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the assailant shot his way into the building, shattering glass on the front door. In the process, the gunman seriously wounded the printing company’s owner and another employee.
Lasater followed the shooter into the building and provided first aid and comfort to the two victims while the shooter was still active in the building. It is believed his heroism and care may have saved their lives. Both victims were later taken to a hospital in Springfield with serious injuries, but their conditions were stable.
The gunman, who was unable to locate his target, eventually returned home where he was apprehended by police.
“Often it’s in a time of tragedy, crisis or panic that our true character is revealed,” says Kenny Steeves, vice president of BP/LP operations. “Steve’s valiant actions and story should serve as an inspiration to all of us as we strive to be more courageous and strong in our communities.”
